Single precision on an Apple GPU#
A run can hold its field and evaluate its nonlinear response in binary32 with
precision="single", which halves the memory of every field-sized buffer and is what
an Apple-silicon GPU computes in. Whether a problem keeps its accuracy in binary32 is
a property of the problem, so this example runs two of them both ways and compares:
the photoionisation blue shift of
Photoionisation-induced soliton blue-shift, here on an envelope grid
with the envelope-grid plasma, and a short radial argon filament on a field grid. Each
runs in binary64 on backend="auto" and in binary32, where "auto" chooses the
mlx backend on a Mac with a Metal GPU.
What to look for. The two precisions’ output spectra lie on top of each other on a
40 dB scale; their difference, normwise over the whole saved field, is of order
\(10^{-5}\) for the capillary and \(10^{-6}\) for the filament – set by the
controller’s tolerance and the binary32 propagator’s rounding, which accumulates over
the run’s steps – and the energy, the spectral centroid, the electron density, the
peak intensity and the beam radius agree to the digits printed. At these sizes much
of each run’s wall time is its set-up: the GPU run took about 0.6 times native’s
binary64 time for the capillary and the same for the filament on a MacBook Pro M5
Max, while
the envelope plasma’s step itself is several times faster on the GPU
(Single precision).
What is approximate. Single precision’s tolerance floor is rtol = 1e-6 (the
default here); a problem that amplifies small perturbations strongly, such as a
noise-free comb-to-continuum, reaches its accuracy over a shorter length, as the
survival record states. Timings depend on
the machine and its load.
